Philips High School

Philips High School is a community secondary school located in Whitefield, Greater Manchester, on the site of Stand Grammar School for Girls. The current Headmaster is Mr. C. J. Trees. Philips High School used to be Stand Grammar for Girls but in the 80s was made a coeducational School. There was also the Stand Grammar for Boys Building on Church Lane which was used as part of Bury College for a short while until it was demolished to make way for houses. Philips High School has changed a lot since it was Stand Grammar for girls.
Philips High School was named a Maths and Computing College and therefore received a grant from major computing company, Microsoft. It now has its own sports hall which is also open to public after school hours. In the recent past, the sports centre received a refurbishment thanks to the investment of an Australian company. This included the updating of the gymnasium and the planning of several new developments. It also has three all weather pitches found on the schools main field just next to the sports hall, there have also been several refurbishments inside the actual building too, like new ICT Rooms and new classroom furniture. After the summer of 2010 the school will have a new building in Lobjoit court found in the centre of the school, this building will contain new ICT suites that will be used for under 16's ICT diplomas and normal ICT lessons for pupils of the school. The school hall which still has on display the Head girl boards from Stand Grammar for Girls, and also contains the Head Girl and Boy name boards from when the school was renamed Philips High School. The hall contains a Stage and a Balcony which is used during assemblies. The school also uses past Head Teachers' and Governors' names for their House Point System (Clive, Ineson, Keech, Lobjoit) (Philips, Ragdale, Sidall). They are often referred to as C, I, K, L and P, R, S. In the years immediately after the change from grammar to comprehensive, there were only the four houses (C, P, R and S). Grace Lobjoit was the first headmistress of the Girls Grammar School. The school was also the place of filming for the BBC drama, Drop Dead Gorgeous.
==History==
The current school building was built in 1937 and opened as Stand Grammar School for Girls when the girls left the school on Church Lane (also in Whitefield). In the 1980s the boys grammar school was closed and the girls grammar was renamed Philips High School and became a mixed gender school.
